INSTRUCTIONS FROM GOD'S WORD
God has given His children guidelines on how we are to live and act. His Word is specific and needs to be obeyed. The following topics and verses give us an idea of how we are to live.
Hearing Instruction - Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
Enticement of sinners - Proverbs 1:10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
Truthfulness - Proverbs 3:3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
Trusting in God not self - Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Taking punishment and correction - Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: 12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son [in whom] he delighteth.
God sees all you do - Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.
Oversleeping - Proverbs 6:6-11 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. 9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? 10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: 11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
Obeying parents - Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Seven things God hates - Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Five things children of God should hate - Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Wise / Foolish Son - Proverbs 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son [is] the heaviness of his mother.
Wise ones listen / foolish ones won't - Proverbs 10:8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.
Talking too much - Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Results of Pride - Proverbs 11:2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Guarding our tongue - Proverbs 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
Seek good not evil - Proverbs 11:27 He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
Wise men win souls - Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
Love Instruction - Proverbs 12:1 Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
Despising God's Word - Proverbs 13:13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
Chastening early - Proverbs 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
Anger - Proverbs 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
Showing kindness to less fortunate - Proverbs 14:21 He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
Controlling temper - Proverbs 14:29 He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but [he that is] hasty of spirit exalteth folly.
Having a soft answer - Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
Countenance of believers - Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
Mans ways judged by God - Proverbs 16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.
Commit all to God - Proverbs 16:3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
Please God in ALL things - Proverbs 16:7 When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Pride - Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Mocking poor - Proverbs 17:5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
Showing love at all times - Proverbs 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Answering before hearing all - vProverbs 18:13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.
Showing friendliness - Proverbs 18:24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Fearing God brings life - Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
Don't listen to untruth - Proverbs 19:27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
Character of child is seen in his actions - Proverbs 20:11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Guard your name - Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Training a child in God's ways - Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Thoughts of the heart - Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Listening to Father and Mother - Proverbs 23:22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Always seek truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding - Proverbs 23:23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Never be envious of evil men - Proverbs 24:1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
Don't rejoice over someone's failures - Proverbs 24:17-18 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: 18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.
Don't return evil for evil - Proverbs 24:29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.
Giving good advice
Treatment of enemies - Proverbs 25:21-22 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: 22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
Don't be a talebearer - Proverbs 26:20-22 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. 21 As coals [are] to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. 22 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Boasting - Proverbs 27:1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
Self praise - Proverbs 27:2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
Take instruction from friends, not enemies - Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Results of instruction rejected - Proverbs 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
Don't be hasty with words - Proverbs 29:20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
Obedience commanded by God - Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
Love for brother - Hebrews 13:1 Let brotherly love continue.
Live in peace - Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Words and thoughts acceptable to God - Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
Do all to glorify God - Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Do not complain - Philippians 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
Think on things of God - Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Be content with what you have - Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
Do everything as to God, not to men - Colossians 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Be an example - 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Live as a believer should live - Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Have humility - James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
How often to forgive - Luke 17:4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
Unconfessed sin in believers - Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
Esteem others above self - Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Why memorize Bible verses - Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Why attend church - Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Why read God's Word - Psalm 32:8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
Listening to parents, teachers , figures in authority - Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
